Okay, to further deal with my foot-in-mouth incident, most of the people I’ve met in the Dionysus forums have been wonderfully focused on the God and on having a relationship with Him, and less on being militant about how that has to happen. The Hellenic forums have been excellent resources as well, as long as I keep my filters up for dogmatic proclamations about the right way to do things. I just keep in mind that it may be right for the author, but that I need to make it work for me. I’m actually feeling happy about the wealth of idea and information out there on how to connect with Dionysus. Right now, I’m reading a book called Pagan Grace: Dionysos, Hermes, and Goddess Memory in Daily Life by Ginette Paris. It’s been a great study on the absence of ecstasy and the wild in modern life. I continue to have strong synchronicity in my pursuit of information and experience with Dionysus.
We had a business meeting/book study last night for Desert Rain Coven. We are almost done with our By-laws, Statement of Practice and slight changes to the Dedicant Studies, which are called Seed Studies for Prairie Fire Coven. Last night we started going through Truth or Dare and Covencraft, as well. I think we are going to add Judy Harrow’s Wicca Covens to the mix for good measure, as TOD tends to talk a lot about groups that are gathered for a task, like a political action, rather than covens. I mean, lots of good coven stuff too, but we are doing a lot of filtering. WC is all about covens, so that will be helpful. Plus, I just love Judy Harrow. We made several decisions and got loads of work done. We had fun doing the Crow/Grace/Snake/Dragon/Spider exercise from TOD, and discovered that for the most part, we are pretty balanced priestesses and that we make a good pair for starting a coven.
Our connection with Dionysus has been moving, stunning and immediate. On this upcoming moon, we will be doing a Dionysian trance to get some information on which Goddess we should focus on. So far, I have looked at Artemis, Hekate, and Cybele. It is entirely possible that we may get something very different out of our ritual. TS has never participated in a shared trance, so I think it will be a good experience for both of us. We are allowing for the definite possibility that Dionysus may provide us with some different information about our coven name, as well. I am really looking forward to this ritual.
Our plan for the Autumn Equinox includes a reenactment of the Persephone/Demeter story that will involve the kids — I am so looking forward to that. Sacred theater with children (and these girls are actually fairly decent actress-performers) — who could ask for more? We’re also doing a ritual to honor animals and the wild and will be talking about harvest, abundance and appreciation with our meal, which has a Greek theme.
We have scheduled TS’s initiation for the October new moon. I have asked for essays on philosophy, ethics, deity and initiation. We will be following the traditions set up by PFC. I am very excited to do this work.
